About The CornerStone Initiative
The CornerStone Initiative is a 501(c)3 Christian Community Development organization founded in 2011 for the purpose of helping low-income families move from chronic dependency to the dignity of self-sufficiency. Though we seek to serve people living in situations of poverty throughout Madison County, we pay special attention to the needs within Huntsville’s Westside where the poverty level is greater than 50% and the unemployment level is typically more than five to six times higher than that of the Huntsville Metro area. Our goal is to help people help themselves. We have found, through experience, that the key to seeing sustainable results within this population is through a long-term, relational approach where hope is ignited, opportunities are available, and long-term engagement allows for measurable results.
CornerStone envisions a place where individuals and community are holistically restored, empowered, and flourishing. This approach comes from the understanding that poverty cannot be strictly defined in material or economic terms. Instead, CornerStone understands that a person can experience great “need” not only materially, but also relationally, emotionally, spiritually, or physically. Because poverty is complex, lasting solutions cannot be found simply in giving away material items (i.e., food, clothing, toys, etc.).
Therefore, CornerStone is not a direct service provider. Instead, this organization seeks to use Christ-centered, relational approaches to empower residents to help themselves and their own community. When this happens, dignity that may have been stripped away from cycles of dependency and chronic need is restored. Restored dignity leads to ownership of the solutions for an individual’s vulnerable situation.
CornerStone builds on the belief that God has given every person inherent worth, value, gifts, and skills. Once that foundation is in place, we can introduce students to education, employment, and enrichment initiatives that equip and empower them to have the dignity of providing for themselves and their own families. The major initiatives (programs) that have been or are being created with this goal in mind are:
Jobs for Life
Faith and Finances
Community Engagement in the Alyndale and Lane Park neighborhoods in 35805
